After what seemed like a 1,589,509,708,374 hour day, I’m home after a heavy nap and tumblin’ away. Mumford & Sons tuned into my ears and a Gatorade in arms reach. Let’s do this..
Ever come across something that totally left you in awe? Something you just took in a marveled at? We all have. Whether it was a prized possesion, a relationship, materials, or just a weird and awkward item that dampens your social life. But hey, whatever floats your boat!
On this past Friday afternoon I met an eldery gentleman by the name of Ken Hitch. He immediately insisted that I call him “Grandpa Ken”. Really liked the guy already. He had delivered medication for my grandmother and my mother had engaged in a conversation with him. As I walked by my mom she insisted that I get a flyer for church. I did so and decided to stay and meet the man.
My mom, being a gnarly Christ follower, invited Grandpa Ken to bible study that night. He said that he’d love to attend but his wife, Dorothy, had been ill for some time, but he’d definately love to visit our church when an opportunity comes along.
He had already attended a church In Selma, CA, so nothing we were talking about was foreign to him. He has family who minister and pastor churches across the nation, so you could imagine talking about who lives where and who does what in his family for God. Even those who don’t serve the Lord. Regardless, he still loves them.
What really stood out to me in our conversation was how he met his wife Dorothy. Every timehe mentioned his wife his face lit up and his bright blue eyes sparkled, as if he had just met this “dark haired gal” for the first time and was so eager to tell everyone about her.
Almost 60 years ago, he was enlisted in the Army at the age of 17 and eventually became a Sargent. A friend of his invited him to church.
In Grandpa Ken’s words:
“I asked my buddy who is that dark haired gal over there? She’s gorgeous. I really wanted to find out who she was, but didn’t have to nerve to talk to her. After the service we had gone to a get together at a friend’s house and what do you know, there she was.”
53 years later, they remain happily married, I just took that in. 53 years not including their time of dating. How amazing is that? Amazing what love can withstand. Without a doubt there where trails and bumps along the road but here they are today.
Now, this is isn’t where I tie it in with God, it’s more of a personal thing within us.
Ohhhhh, I used the “P” word! Ohhhhh. Yup personal. Here we go..
So many times we come across opportunities to love, to care for someone. Now, not only meaning between a man and a woman, but a friend, family member, coworker, classmate, even our own church members. Where’s the love in that handshake? That “Hi”? Or the ”I’m gonna ignore that person because I don’t want to talk to them right now”? We all do it.
Don’t be so proud for love.
“I don’t have to love anyone. Just God, and God loves me.”
Then what’s the point?
The lost, the broken, the least of these. Where are we? “Where is the love”?
We long to be like Christ, and Christ’s love endures forever.
Couples like ken and Dorothy proves just that. Just take the time to embrace it. God’s not dead. God is love. Love is alive. Let Love Rule.
“Where you invest your love, you invest your life.”
